Pro Skier Nick Devore Shows His Toughness, Strength and Perseverance During the 2010/11 Ski Season

Aspen Colorado based Pro Skier Nick Devore Overcomes Broken Bones and Survives an Avalanche, while Freeskiing, Filming, and Traveling throughout the 2010/11 Season.

Off to a rough start, Nick began the season tumbling through hidden rocks and breaking his scapula in December 2010. Nick healed quickly and was back skiing by late January 2011 only missing some of the early part of this epic ski season. Shortly after getting back on his skis, Nick competed in the Crested Butte Freeskiing Championships. Although Devore was still trying to get his confidence back, he had one of his best competition performances ever, placing third in the qualifier and 10th overall, impressing everyone with his telemark style and ability to compete with some of the worlds top alpine skiers. With his confidence levels back to normal, Devore back and skiing better than ever.
Nick teamed up with his longtime fellow telemark friend, Andy Jacobson to endure the inaugural “Power of Four” ski mountaineering race. The grueling race traverses up and down all four of Aspens ski mountains (Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, Snowmass, and Aspen Mountain), covering 26 miles and 12,000 vertical feet and was deemed “the best ski mountaineering race in North America”. Devore and Jacobson didn’t only finish the race but placed 14th against America’s top randonee (alpine touring) racers. Having done so well in the race, Devore was inspired to actually train and do more of these types of events in the future.
Nick returned to Italy to defend his “Scufoneda” telemark championship title, and defend it he did, winning the Italian Freeskiing competition for the second year in a row. While in the region, Nick spent a few weeks continuing to explore Italy and shooting photographs with world renowned action sports photographer, Gabe Rogel.
Upon returning back to his home in Aspen, conditions were at their all time best, as the snow kept falling on the Rockies. Taking advantage of the great conditions, Devore skied the Laundry Route of Pyramid Peak, one of North Americas most coveted, exposed, and aesthetic 14er ski descents. After many more epic powder days, Nick cheated death when he survived an avalanche with only a broken femur. The crew at “flight for life” came to aid Nick on the scene and flew him to get treatment.
These days, Devore is recovering fast and is very motivated to get strong and stay focused on his skiing goals. In his words, “…to continue pushing the limits of freeskiing and ski mountaineering in a sustainable and aware surfy style”.
Devore is excited for a summer of long bike rides, hard rock climbs, whitewater kayaking, lots of yoga, work on his off-the-grid farm, all in preparation to clip back into his telemark skis next winter.

We are transitioning into week two of the 3rd Portillo Big Mountain Telemark Camp and the conditions are looking good! Week one was amazing, the conditions were great and the crew was so much fun. It was storming as we arrived and they have been opening new terrain everyday, providing freshies all week. The ten of us were pretty much the only people skiing the goods, we pretty much have a private resort to ourselves with lift access terrain that rivals runs I have paid way too mu8ch for in AK. It was so cool to see everyone’s improvement and I have also learned alot about myself, people and mountains. We practice yoga twice a day, ski well over 10,000 vert every day, hit the hot tub everyday, and have also been slack lining. In celebratio0n of an epic week we danced for five hours last night, so much fun!! Enjoy these shots from Luke Lubchenco and hope to see you next year in Portillo!

I recently returned from a near round the world adventure. Skiing brought me from the Dolomite’s of Italy to the atlas mtn’s of Morocco, to Glacier Bay, Haines, and the St. Elias of Alaska. I was constantly traveling for 3 months, slept in something like 60 different places from 4 star hotels, to Muslim slums, to a snowcave and tents and peoples floors. I have thousands of amazing photgraphs and will post them soon, but for now here is a teaser from each place.

Pretty insane river running, our camp almost got taken out by a tsunami ice fall wave, yikes!

Unfortunatly my camera ran out of batteries before we got to the outer coast of South East Ak, so thats it! I am stoked to be home and am trying to grow food and build a shelter on my new property. Stay tuned for more detailed reports on each trip and my progress this summer. Peace!

With minimal snow in Aspen this year I hadn’t skied a “line” until Jackson. It felt so good and reminded me why I live and ski to finally shred a line! This zone is called pucker face, and ya I was a bit puckered up standing on top and only seeing cliff drops rolling over and disappearing.

Jacqui Edgerly has been stomping back flips. She went for one here and surprised us all by boosting about 80ft, unfortunately she over rotated a bit, but provided us all with some great entertainment. Crazy girl!

And finally, in true Jackson outlaw style we lit up a “Canadian candle stick”, and it was sweet!!
